COCMP is a multi-institution, interagency collaboration
with the goal of integrated monitoring of currents in
the coastal ocean. COCMP is a component of a nationwide
effort to advance understanding of the ocean by developing
long-term observing systems - an Integrated Ocean Observing
System (IOOS). The Central and Northern California Coastal
Ocean Observation System (CenCOOS) is one of three consortia
in which UC Santa Cruz through the Institute of Marine
Sciences is a partner institution.

Field Officer Chief
One
of many small field offices maintained by the United
States Geological Survey (USGS), the Marina Field Office
collects high quality data to help monitor and manage
water resources. A total of 42 continuously operating
stream gauges are managed on 26 streams and rivers located
in 8 counties from Half Moon Bay in the north to Paso
Robles in the south, and from the Pacific Coast, eastward
to Interstate 5. Streamflow data are collected via satellite
by the Marina Field Office in partnership with 17 cooperating
local, state and federal agencies.
The
data are used for a variety of purposes including flood
warning, climate studies, monitoring stream flow requirements
for aquatic organisms, water management, and groundwater
aquifer recharge efforts.
